The Elijah Craig Straight Rye Whiskey (375 ml) delivers a reliable, balanced rye experience with citrus-brightness, gentle spice, and warm grain sweetness. Its compact size makes it a thoughtful pick for trying or gifting. It’s a comfortable introduction to rye—well-suited for rye newcomers and everyday drinking.
🏺 Origins & Production
-
Crafted by Heaven Hill in Kentucky, this rye follows Elijah Craig’s classic mash bill of 51% rye, 35% corn, and 14% malted barley, clocking in at 94 proof (47% ABV) .
-
While not branded as “small batch,” it's made from the same base that underpins the Elijah Craig Bourbon line, designed for crowd-pleasing balance and accessibility .
👃 Nose
Lively and approachable, the aroma blends bright citrus peel (lemon, orange) with floral rye spice, honeyed sweetness, and soft vanilla. A whisper of bubblegum and menthol herbal touches adds nuance .
👅 Palate & Texture
-
The palate is bright and zesty, opening with lemon zest and cardamom, flowing into caramel, sweet bakery notes, and hints of cinnamon and allspice.
-
The mouthfeel is buttery, slightly oily, and rounded—carrying gentle fruit and toast richness without heaviness .
🔁 Finish
The finish leans spicy and dry: baking spice and pepper emerge over oak tannins, with a clean, warming echo. Despite its moderate length, the spicy warmth lingers pleasantly .
🌟 Style & Impressions
-
This rye is often described as "barely legal" rye—leaning more toward bourbon-like sweetness with restrained rye intensity. It's bold without harshness, friendly yet flavorful .
-
Tasting commentary highlights its mass-appeal profile: easy drinking neat or solid in cocktails, but it may feel unremarkable to seasoned rye connoisseurs .
🍸 Best Use & Occasions
-
Excellent in cocktails like Old Fashioneds or Boulevardiers, where its smooth spice and honeyed sweetness stand up well to bitters and vermouth.
-
Equally suitable neat or with a dash of water—its approachable character makes it perfect for casual enjoyment, travel-friendly occasions, or sharing in small formats.
